Very good Ed! Lets hope it gets cited more often, especially to dispel those stimulant theories.

Thank you for this thorough information; however, I recently ran into a seed pack of "Ornamental Millet" Pennisetum glaucum var Purple Baron. It is an attractive plant which I may grow. How can I find out if the seed heads would be safe for my gerbils?
Thanks, Mary

I'm familiar with the variety and it's a purple ornamental type of pearl millet that is becoming quite popular as a large back of the border type of ornamental grass. The thing is because of its colouring, it's probably sky high in tannins so may be very bitter tasting compared to the normal gold/grey seeded varieties. It won't be poisonous, but I doubt it will be enjoyed by either birds or gerbils!
